How to Remove Cornice Without Damage

Cornices can be a beautiful addition to a room, but sometimes they need to be removed. Maybe you’re remodelling and want to take them down, or maybe they’re damaged and need to be replaced. No matter the reason, it’s important to remove them correctly so that you don’t damage the cornice or ceiling.

The Tools

Before starting your project, you’ve got to have the right tools for the job. You’ll need a chisel, hammer, ladder, and trimming knife. Remember to also have gloves, a dust mask, and safety glasses on as safety is a priority!

Let’s Start Removing Cornices

First, use your trimming knife to score along the edges of the cornice where it meets the wall and ceiling. It’s important to avoid cutting into the wall or ceiling by cutting into the cavity behind the cornice instead. This will help the chisel get a good grip and stop paint from coming away from both surfaces when the cornice is removed.

Next, use your chisel and hammer to start prying the cornice away from the wall. Start at one end and work your way down. The key is to be gentle when nudging with the hammer so not to damage the cornice or surfaces as you go. It’ll also be easier to avoid damage by taking your time in prying the cornice.  Remember that a little patience will go a long way.

Once the cornice is removed, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove any loose debris before starting on the next section.

Some Additional Notes

damaged cornice that needs to be removed and replaced

It is important to note that not all cornices can be removed without damage depending on the material the cornice and ceiling is made from. For example, plasterglass cornices are usually strapped in the back and will almost always have to be damaged to be removed.
